Presented here is a 1949 Philadelphia Athletics team photo signed by 28 A’s. The 1949 A’s were the second to last A’s team to be managed by Connie Mack, who, until 1950, was the only manager the Philadelphia ballclub had ever known. The A’s finished 81-73, good for fifth place in the American League and 18 games in front of the sixth place team.
The elderly Mack is front and center in this photograph, a the batboy, Frank Cunningham, sitting by his feet. Mack was famous for unfailingly wearing a suit when he coached games, and it was in his gameday attire that he suited up in for this photograph. Other signatures on this photograph include the Hall of Famers Al Simmons, then a coach with the team, and second baseman Nellie Fox. Other signatures include Elmer Valo, Ferris Fain, Pete Suder, Earle Brucker, Jimmy Dykes, Dave Keef, Les McCrabb, Buddy Rosar, Alex Kellner, Bubba Harris, Don White, Taffy Wright, Sam Chapman, Lou Brissie, Joe Astroth, Dick Fowler, Eddie Joost, Carl Scheib, Bill McCahan, Tod Davis, Joe Coleman, Wally Moses, Phil Marchildon, Bobby Shantz, and Hank Biasatti. The signatures have been written in black pen. This 8x 10 inch black and white photograph comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (S00411).
