In an era of outsized stars for the New York Yankees, Elston Howard was an understated but key player for four Yankees World Series teams. An All-Star in nine consecutive seasons, Howard hit over .300 three times and claimed two Gold Glove awards. In 1963, Howard won the American League MVP award, the fourth consecutive year a Yankee won the esteemed award and the eighth time in a 10-year span. Howard, the first African-American man to play for the Yankees, retired in 1968 after a season and a half with the Red Sox. He signed this index card in blue pen.
