Presented here is a check signed by Babe Ruth, and made out to his second wife, Claire Merritt Ruth. Ruth and Merritt were married in 1929, and remained married until the Babe’s death in 1948. This check originates from the Chemical Bank & Trust company of New York, and features “Babe Ruth” printed on the right side of the check in black text. This check was signed on June 20th, 1936, the year after Ruth played his final season in the Major Leagues and the same year he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class. “Clair Ruth” is written in black fountain pen on the “Pay to the Order of” line, and the check is for the value of $250.00, which is roughly $4,400 in today’s currency. Babe Ruth has signed the bottom of this check in black fountain pen, writing his name as “GH Ruth”. This check has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (83167223).
