The fifth modern Olympic Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1912. Held from May 5th to July 27th, these Olympics featured many athletes and organizers who would leave lasting legacies in not only the Olympics, but worldwide sporting culture. Jim Thorpe, a man known as much for his sporting achievements as for his fall from grace, appears on page 12 of this program, which was distributed at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, July 14th. Thorpe is mentioned in the results from the second day of the decathlon, a competition that he would win. Also mentioned in the results for the decathlon is Avery Brundage, who would go on to become the fifth president of the International Olympic Committee, and the only American to hold that lofty posting.
The Hall of Fame shortstop George Wright appears on page seven. Baseball was a “demonstration sport” at this Olympiad, and Wright was the celebrity umpire for the event, which marked the first time a Swedish baseball club competed against an American nine. The man often regarded as the father of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, is mentioned on page three as the president of the “Comité International de Olympique” as M. le Baron Pierre de Coubertin. This program is in very good condition, with all its pages still bound in the early 20th century artifact.
