Before World War I, Grover Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies was the greatest right-handed pitcher in the game. Starting out with 28 wins his rookie year, Alexander led the NL in wins five consecutive seasons and took the Phils to the World Series in 1915. He won the pitcher’s Triple Crown twice before the Phillies traded him to Chicago for much needed cash. Before he could pitch for the Cubs, Alex was drafted and sent to France. Shellshocked and suffering from epileptic seizures brought on by his drinking problem, he returned to Chicago to try to regain his Hall of Fame form. This touching letter from a young fan concludes his request for an autograph with “Hoping you will win lots of games”. The Hall of Famer has signed the bottom part of the vintage 6 x 7” note in blue fountain pen and added “Chicago Cubs” after his name. Alexander played for the Cubs from 1918 until 1926 so this letter dates from that time period in which he won 137 games for Chicago. JSA sticker number B17565 affixed to the back of the note. Letter of Authenticity from JSA and PSA/DNA.
