Abdul Salaam was a key member of the famed “New York Sack Exchange” defensive line of the New York Jets during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Alongside Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons, and Joe Klecko, Salaam harassed opposing quarterbacks in an era when sacks were not an official statistic. Because of this, Salaam’s career numbers are deceptive, as the powerful defensive tackle frequently engulfed two blockers and opened holes for his fellow lineman. In 1981, when the New York Sack Exchange was at the height of its power, Salaam recorded seven sacks while helping Klecko record 20.5 and Gastineau 20.
This green New York Jets’ helmet was used during or after the 1978 season, when the Jets updated their uniform styles. This Riddell helmet with a white facemask, has “JETS” logo decals on each side. Salaam’s number “74” is located on the back of the helmet in white numerals. The padding on the inside of the size 7 3/8 helmet is intact. This item comes with a LOA from Abdul Salaam.
