Although Mickey Mantle is best known as the free-swinging centerfielder who patrolled Yankee Stadium in the No. 7 jersey, the Oklahoman wore “6” during his first stint in the big leagues. Mantle debuted with the number “6” shirt in 1951, wearing the number until he was sent down to AAA Kansas City for some additional seasoning. Upon his return later in the season, Mantle was issued his now-retired “7” jersey. This photograph was taken while The Mick was wearing the number six jersey. He is pictured in a left-handed batting stance, the “6” on his back clearly visible. Based on the appearance of Mantle’s blue pen signature, it was likely written very early in his career. This is truly a one of a kind piece and the first of it’s kind that we have ever auctioned. This photograph measures 7 x 10 inches and comes in a 12 x 14 ½ inch frame which is clear in the back to view the entire photo. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AA01868).
