Tony Gwynn collected the 1,500th hit of his major league career on August 15th, 1990, with a single against Montreal Expos reliever Steve Frey. The game in question went 17 innings, with the Expos scoring two in the top of the 17th to win 5-3, and Gwynn’s hit came in the 12th inning of this five hour and fifteen minute marathon. Gwynn recorded two hits in this game, driving in two on RBI, one on a first inning sacrifice fly and the second on a third inning single. The offered baseball is an Official National League William D. White sphere, and it is the very baseball Gwynn hit for his milestone knock. “AB R H RBI” and the corresponding “6 0 2 2” are written on the sweet spot of the ball in black marker, and “1500th Base Hit – Hit off Frey of Montreal at San Diego Stadium 8-15-90” is written in black marker on the panel to the north of the sweet spot. This item comes with a LOA from Alicia Gwynn.
