Before 2013’s “42” movie, there was “The Jackie Robinson Story”. This ONL Giles ball was signed during the filming of that movie in the winter of 1950. The subject and star of the movie, Jackie Robinson, has signed the ball below the date “1950” along with 17 other actors and actual professional ballplayers who can be seen during the film’s game sequences. The movie was filmed in California and used local PCL players including Frank Kelleher, (Hollywood Stars) Cliff Aberson (Hollywood Stars), Pinky Woods (Hollywood Stars), Lou Stringer (Hollywood Stars), Pat Flaherty, Eddie Chandler (LA Angels and former teammate of Jackie in Brooklyn in 1947) and major leaguers and Los Angeles residents Peanuts Lowery and Gene Mauch. The ball has been notated on the sweet spot “Ballplayers in the Motion Picture Film of Jackie Robinson” and also “La Palma Park 2-14-15-16” is written on the top of a side panel. A truly unique piece of memorabilia from one of the first major motion pictures to feature the life of an African-American. Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
