A flamboyant WWI aviator, Col. Roscoe Turner, was the central figure in an ambitious 1934-35 promotion for H.J. Heinz cereals. During this period, Heinz delivered beautiful trading cards (picturing famous airplanes as well as their pilots) as product inserts, while simultaneously offering additional Turner-themed premiums by mail. A fascinating array of these scarce items, along with original mailing envelopes, is presented here. The group includes: 1934 F277-2 Heinz "Famous Airplanes" Ad Sheet w/Heinz Envelope (2 Pieces) - 8-3/4" x 6-1/2", thin-paper sheet has a single card affixed to the front, with instructions for obtaining the complete set. (Those directions, actually, advised the reader to keep buying cereal and trade with friends for needed numbers.) The delicate sheet presents attractively, but concedes incipient splits at the mailing fold-lines; 1934-35 "Col. Roscoe Turner's Famous Flying Corps" Photo and Premium Offer Brochure, with Certificate and Lieutenant's Wings (3 Pieces) - Brochure is twice-folded to 4-1/2" x 6-1/2", printed on one side. Content includes a picture of Turner, an introductory letter, and coupons for ordering "Wings" of progressively higher rank. Certificate measure 4-1/2" x 7"; metallic Lieutenant's Wings (1"-long) are secured to a partially printed 2-1/4" x 4" card; 1934 "Silver-Plated Captain's Wings" (1 Piece) - secured to card; 1935 "Gold-Plated Major's Wings" and Congratulatory Letter w/Turner Envelope (3 Pieces) - Turner's printed letter on "57 Flying Corps" letterhead conveys congratulations for attaining the Major's Wings (included, secured to card). Items reflect generally clean, circulated condition, with original recipient's name filled in at appropriate places and general mailing wear affecting the envelopes.
