When professional athletes have a remarkable season, they usually are requested to spend the off season doing the lecture circuit and writing a book providing insight to what happened during that glorious season. In 1961, Roger Maris was no exception to this rule. Since he broke Babe Ruth’s single season home run record of 60 round trippers, Maris was in demand. Maris sat down with New York Yankee beat writer Jim Ogle to pen his recap of the 1961 Yankees season and the great home run chase, a chase which caused Maris serious stress. On the first page Maris inscribed and signed in blue ink, “To Milt Best Wishes to a Good Friend. Roger Maris” The entire inscription and signature rates a (“10”). The book itself has some damage, with a small area of a reverse cover corner missing part of the tip. This does not affect the signature page. Nobody can understand what Maris went through that summer and fall chasing the Babe, but they can follow that season in Maris’ own words with this inscribed and signed book.
