One of the earliest “strip card” sets is the W516. It is also one of the most popular of these small sets due to the heavy HOF talent on its “roster.” This 30 cards set depicts color drawn pictures of the players set against a bright colored background. The set includes such luminaries as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson Christy Mathewson and Rogers Hornsby. In all, there are 11 HOFers present. These cards appear all hand cut, and come in a variety of edges and border sizes. The respective grades do not account for card size, just appearance. Any cards which are extremely short will be designated with an “s.” Includes: 1 Ruth (VG/EX), 4 Schalk (VG/EX), 5 Speaker (EX, “s”), 6 Cobb (VG), 7 Hornsby (GD), 8 Johnson (FR), 9 Alexander (EX), 21 Cicotte (VG), 23 Collins (EX, “s”), 24 Mathewson (GD/VG), 27 Hooper (EX, “s”) and 29 Rousch (GD, “s”).Note: The back of the Cicotte card (#21) displays a rare ghost image of Babe Ruth from the #1 card in this set. With the amount of stars to locate and then obtain, it could cost a pretty penny, and would make this set extremely difficult to piece together card by card. Complete 30 card set.
