Presented is the last helmet worn by former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro linebacker Chuck Howley. The five-time All-Pro retired after the 1973 season, the THIRD time he retired in his career! Howley is the only man to win the Super Bowl MVP award while playing for a losing team (Super Bowl V), and was the first defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP award. Interestingly, the following season, Howley had a fumble recovery and an interception in Super Bowl VI, but finished behind Roger Staubach for that Super Bowl MVP award. Howley is regarded as the best linebacker who is NOT in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This Riddell 7 5/8 suspension style helmet has the well-known blue Cowboys stars on both sides, and “Howley NOPO” written on the inside. The facemask, chinstrap and crown of the helmet show the extensive wear indicative of a hard-hitting linebacker. The back of the helmet has the name “Hewitt” in blue dyno tape. Gene W. Hewett was a long time employee of Clint Murchinson, the original owner of the Cowboys and was instrumental in the early success of the franchise. He was very well regarded within the Cowboys community. Howley gave this helmet to Mr. Hewett, who then proceeded to gift it to a fan in 1980. A letter from Mr. Hewett to the fan accompanies this helmet, describing the helmet and its usage, providing certifiable provenance. Dallas Cowboy game used items are always in demand, especially from a member of the original Doomsday Defense. Helmet is signed flawlessly in blue by Howley and he added the inscription "Super Bowl 5 MVP".
