In 1955 the New York Yankees met the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series for the fifth time. The series went a full seven games, with both teams trading close victories. In Game 7, Dodgers starter Johnny Podres threw one of the best games in World Series history, shutting out the Yankees and winning the first ever World Series MVP Award. Although the Yankees lost, ’55 was the season where their immense talent in the post-DiMaggio era began to coalesce. Mickey Mantle ascended into superstardom, smashing 37 home runs and hitting over .300. Whitey Ford made hitters sing the blues to the tune of 18 victories and a 2.63 ERA. The great Yogi Berra remained a steady presence behind the plate, homering 27 times and knocking in over 100 RBI.

Offered here is an Official American League William Harridge baseball that has been by 28 members of the 1955 American League Champion New York Yankees. Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto have signed their names in blue ink across the sweet spot. Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle’s signature appears on the north panel with the signatures of Don Larsen, Jim Konstanty, Tom Morgan, Ed Robinson, Billy Martin and an unidentified player. Hall of Famer White Ford’s signature is on the east panel with the signatures of Bob Turley, Elston Howard, Charlie Silvera, Rip Coleman (signed as “Gary Coleman”), Andy Carey, Bob Wiesler and an unidentified player. The south panel has the signatures of Bill Skowron, Bob Cerv (signed as “Robert Cerv”), Bob Grim, Tom Carroll, Irv Noren, Frank Leja and an unidentified player. The ball is in good condition, displaying only minor toning and the stampings light, but clear. “Yankees 1955” is hand written in red marker on the stamped sweet spot.
