Ohtani, a heralded rookie from Japan, entered the Major Leagues as the 21st century version of Babe Ruth, earning American League Rookie of the Year honors. An adept pitcher, great hitter, and incendiary base runner, Ohtani’s debut season was transformative for baseball. Ohtani put up a Triple Crown slash line of .285/22/61 in only 326 at bats and a pitching line of 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 51.2 innings.
