JULY 19TH AUCTION
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/20/2013
Miller Huggins was a scrappy second baseman who transferred his fundamental style of baseball towards his managing of the powerful New York Yankees of the 1920s. While not always getting along with superstar Babe Ruth, Huggins nevertheless guided the Yankees to six World Series appearances and three World Series titles. His signature “Miller Huggins” appears on the reverse of the New York Yankee payroll check, dated May 31st, 1922, which is also signed by the owner “Jacob Ruppert” on the front, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. There are the usual cancellation holes, which surround the Huggins signature but barely encroaches the “u” in his last name. This check has been authenticated by PSA/DNA and is encased in their protective holder. This item was part of the John Blattner collection, who is a collector of significant autographed items. Miller Huggins died in 1929 at age 50 during the 1929 season, and authentic examples of this Hall of Fame signature are extremely scarce and desirable.
