The Hall of Fame rightfielder Tony Gwynn wore this navy San Diego Padres helmet on August 1st, 1998, during a game against the Montreal Expos at Stade Olympique. Gwynn collected two hits, the 2,897th and 2,898th of his legendary career. Gwynn’s first knock of the game was a first inning single off Miguel Batista, with Ken Caminiti plating Gwynn on a double to deep left-center in the next at-bat. Gwynn’s second hit of the game came several innings later, in the top of the seventh frame. “Mr. Padre” stroked a single in the no-man’s land between the first and second baseman, with Chris Gomez scoring from third base. Gwynn finished his career with 3,141 hits, with his milestone 3,000th occurring almost exactly a year later at Stade Olympique on August 6th, 1999.
This navy helmet has the Padres logo applied to the front and Gwynn’s number “19” applied to the back. The ear flap is over the right ear and the helmet is a size 7 1/8. Gwynn has signed the brim of the helmet in silver marker. Written on the back head-pad is “8/1/98 #2897 #2898 vs MTL”. The head-pad is not attached to the interior of the helmet. This item comes with a COA from the Gwynn family.
