2019 Winter Auction Closing March 2
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/2/2019
Each card has been graded by SGC. Presented is a 12-card complete set of Universal "The Phantom Rider" non-sports cards issued in 1936. If registered - with its nearly 5.80 GPA - this set would capture the "#1 Current Finest" spot on the SGC Set Registry! These 3-1/4" x 2-7/16" black-and-white cards were printed on incredibly thin card stock. Similar in design and identical in concept to the Flash Gordon movie serial card set of the same time period, this set is believed to have been handed out, one card per week, to young attendees of each new episode of The Phantom Rider; the 1936 Western serial starring Buck Jones. (It is just as possible that these were given out as full sets by participating theaters with the surrender of a "Buck Jones Phantom Rider Club" membership card that had been fully punched by the end of the serial's screening, testifying to the member's flawless attendance.) Ownership of the offered, impossibly rare set is a true mark of distinction among non-sports enthusiasts. The cards themselves - each of which carries an exciting scene from the 1930s serial - seem to challenge the would-be collector: a concluding line on the items' backs states, "Try to collect the entire issue!" One card is difficult enough, but the entire set?! Includes: Graded SGC NM-MT 8: 2 cards w/The Indians Attack and Trapped by Outlaws; SGC NM 7: 2 cards w/Stark Terror and The Night Attack; SGC EX-NM+ 6.5: 1 card, Shot Down; SGC EX-NM 6: 1 card, The Brink of Disaster; SGC EX+ 5.5: 2 cards w/Flaming Gold and The Shaft of Doom; SGC EX 5: 1 card, The Outlaw's Revenge; SGC VG-EX 4: 1 card, Dynamite; SGC VG+ 3.5: 2 cards w/The Last Chance and The Phantom Rides.
