Presented here is a ticket stub from the infamous “Long Count” fight between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey at Soldier Field on September 22nd, 1927. This fight, a rematch of Tunney’s victory a year prior, saw Tunney survive a seventh-round knockdown to defeat Dempsey via unanimous decision. Controversy surrounded this knockdown, as the referee did not begin the ten-count for several seconds due to Dempsey crowding the fallen Tunney and refusing to move to a neutral corner. This fight, the first to ever break $2 million at the gate, was the last of Dempsey’s career and Tunney’s penultimate bout. This ticket stub has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA (26137649).
