Tommy McCarthy's is a Hall of Famer more so for his popularity due to innovations he brought to the game, instead of his unimpressive statistics. His innovations ushered in a more “gentlemanly” game from the rough-and-tumble Baltimore style. McCarthy is credited with perfecting, if not inventing, the hit and run plus batter to runner signals; thus causing base running to be even more of a weapon. McCarthy was the premier base stealer of his day. This card is one of eight different poses McCarthy has in the N172 set, indicating the popularity he enjoyed. This example has a clear, focused image, a blemish free front with nice, almost perfect borders. The reverse has lightness of tone at two corners. The reason for the PSA AUTHENTIC grade might be for the slight shortness of the width (less than 1/16th inch) which this card displays. PSA Graded AUTHENTIC. PSA pop 1 of 3.
