JULY 19TH AUCTION
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/20/2013
Rising from the ashes of the once powerful Lincoln Giants, Shirley
Temple’s dance partner Bill “Bojangles” Robinson bought the team and
dubbed it the “Black Yankees” after the greatest white team of all time.
While the Black Yankees didn’t live up to the reputation of the Bronx
namesakes, they did boast some great players: Satchel Paige, Willie
Wells, Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe and “Mule” Suttles. Offered here is a
rare chance to own a contemporary souvenir purchased at a game during
the glory days of the Negro Leagues. The red felt has faded slightly
over the years but the color silk screened illustration and type are
both still strong. Unlike most older pennants, it does not appear to have
had pins in the corners and all 4 tassels are present. A great pennant
from one of the most highly collected Negro League teams.
