JULY 19TH AUCTION
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/20/2013
This game used road jersey was worn this past April 16, 2013 by the reigning American League Most Valuable Player and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera in Seattle, WA in a game against the Seattle Mariners. All MLB players wore special made jerseys with the number 42, commemorating Jackie Robinson’s first game in the major leagues on April 15, 1947. Both the Tigers and the Mariners had April 15th off, so they honored Robinson a day later.
The Tigers beat the Mariners 6-2 at Safeco Field that day as Cabrera went 3-5 with 4 RBIs, including his 2nd HR of the season (and career HR #323).
The “Cool Base” button down gray jersey has “Detroit” scripted across the front with the number “42” below and on the reverse. All lettering is comprised of navy blue-on orange-on white triple tackle twill. The lower front tail has the “Majestic Authentic Collection” tag with a white strip tag with “46 48 ’13 043” stitched below. This indicates the number, size, year and set #. Cabrera normally wears a size 50, but that jersey felt too big, and he decided to wear a smaller jersey which was for player No. 46 which was for Jose Valverde, who had not yet been activated by the Tigers. Even though all players wore No. 42 on these days, the strip tags indicated the normal jersey number for each player.
The jersey was authenticated by Major League Baseball as soon as Cabrera removed the jersey in the locker room after the game. The “2” on the reverse is affixed with MLB hologram #EK 711302. This is about as iron-clad an authentication process as you can get.
The jersey shows nice use for a jersey worn in only one game, with some light dirt stains on the front.
Miguel Cabrera is the greatest hitter in the game today. This is a rare jersey worn by an exceptional player and future Hall of Famer, worn while honoring one of the most influential baseball players of all time – Jackie Robinson.
