Known as the Iron Horse and the original holder of baseball’s all-time consecutive games played streak, Lou Gehrig was arguably the anchor behind the great New York Yankee teams of the late 1920s and 1930s. Before he succumbed to the disease in 1941 that would bear his name, Gehrig finished his career with a hefty .340 batting average, 2,721 hits, 423 home runs, winner of six World Series titles and played in 2,130 consecutive games until that streak was broken in 1995 by Cal Ripken Jr.
Gehrig’s signature on a baseball is certainly a prized possession for any collector and ones where he has signed his name on the sweet spot, like the one offered here, is a very rare occurrence. The majority of Gehrig signed baseballs, whether single or team-signed, were signed by him predominantly on the side panels. Gehrig’s signature was penned across the sweet spot on this un-dated baseball. Although Gehrig’s signature has been completely traced over, the Iron Horse did sign this ball. There are other unidentifiable signatures on this ball, along with a clubhouse signature of Babe Ruth. The ball displays heavy toning and staining. This comes with a LOA from JSA (BB23424), authenticating Gehrig’s signature and determining that his original signature has been completely traced over.
