With one of the most regal sounding names in baseball history it’s funny that Grover Cleveland Alexander was simply known as “Pete” but it had to be a little confusing growing up with the same name as the President. By any name Alexander remains one of the greatest pitchers in the game, boasting a remarkable 373 wins tied for third place on the all-time list with Christy Mathewson. “Old Pete” reached the World Series three times in his 20-year career famously striking out New York Yankee Tony Lazzeri to finish the 1926 Fall Classic while reported to have still been hung-over after celebrating his previous day’s victory with a long night out on the town in New York City.
Alexander signed this 1920’s vintage “D & M New Official League Ball” with period blue and red stitching on its sweet spot in blue steel-tip fountain pen. Although the ball is slightly scuffed and stained in places, Alexander’s signature remains remarkably intact. The labeling on this ball displays some fading but remains legible. Also inscribed on the side panel in the same blue pen is “July-5 1933”. A wonderful single-signed baseball from one of the great pitchers of his or any other era. This ball comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication.
