In 2006, Italy played France in the first all-European FIFA World Cup Final since Italy beat West Germany in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, this World Cup has gone down in infamy due to France captain Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt on Italy’s Marco Materazzi late in extra time. Zidane, who opened the game’s scoring with a seventh minute penalty, was immediately red carded and ejected from his final international soccer match. The game finished 1-1 after extra time, with David Trezeguet’s missed penalty giving Italy all the room the azzurri needed to clinch their fourth World Cup title. Despite his sending off, Zidane was named the Golden Ball winner of the tournament and Germany’s Miroslav Klose finished as the Golden Boot winner.

Offered in this lot is a winners’ medal from the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. This medal is gold in color, with the 2006 World Cup logo and “2006 FIFA World Cup Germany” etched on the front of the medal in high relief. The opposite side of the Bertoni medal is etched with a high-relief depiction of the FIFA World Cup Trophy. The medal comes in the original Bertoni presentation box. It is accompanied by a LOA from Alexandre Silva Da Silveira, a member of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
