United States center-forward and midfielder Michelle Akers was presented with this custom Big Horn saddle in honor of her retirement from the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. Akers was one of the most decorated players in United States soccer history, winning a pair of World Cup titles and scoring over 100 goals for her country. In 1996, Akers led the United States to the gold medal in the first women’s soccer competition in Olympic history. A Hermann Trophy winner at UCF, Akers scored the first goal in USWNT history while still a collegian, striking against Denmark in the United States’ second-ever game. After retiring in 2000, Akers was named the FIFA Woman co-Player of the Century.

Today, Akers operates the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach outside of Atlanta, where the former United States number 10 rehabilitates and cares for neglected or mistreated animals of all stripes. The saddle offered in this lot is a tremendous display piece and a unique piece of soccer memorabilia! This saddle is black, with United States Soccer logos sewn on both flaps. An ornately decorated plaque on the cantle is etched with “Michelle Akers / FIFA / Women’s Player / Of The Century”. This saddle comes with a LOA signed by Michelle Akers. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
