The Uruguayan goalkeeper Andres Mazali was presented with this Olympic double medal for leading Uruguay to both the 1924 and 1928 Olympic gold medals in soccer. Mazali, nicknamed “El Buzo”, was the best goalkeeper in Uruguay during the 1920’s, leading Club Nacional to five Primera Division titles and winning three South American championships with la Celeste. Uruguay’s triumphs in the Paris and Amsterdam Summer Olympics during the 1920’s made the small South American nation an ideal host for the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930; which Uruguay also won in a similarly dominant fashion, defeating the 1928 Olympic silver medalists Argentina in the final.
This offered medal is silver, with a high relief etching of an Olympian standing on a globe. Etched on a banner encircling the globe is “Colombes Campeones Amsterdam”. Etched on the border of the medal’s face is “1924” and on the other side “1928”. Etched in high relief on the opposite side of the medal is “¡Uruguayos! ¡Salve, Footballers Olimpicos!”, “Nobles Tecnicos Valientes”, and the name of the maker of the medal. This medal originates from the estate of Andres Mazali. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
