Uruguay’s legendary midfielder Jose Leandro Andrade was presented with this silver medal by the Uruguay Centennial Committee after leading La Celeste to victory at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. Along with the World Cup, Uruguay celebrated the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of the Uruguayan Constitution of 1830, naming the main stadium in Montevideo the Estadio Centenario in honor of the constitution. Andrade, a carnival musician by trade, had previously led the Uruguayans to monumental victories in the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympic Games, the most prestigious global soccer tournament in the pre-World Cup days. Andrade was past his magnificent prime in 1930, although he still led Uruguay to a decisive 4-2 triumph over rivals Argentina in the World Cup Final.
Domestically, Andrade starred for Bella Vista, Peñarol, and Club Nacional, before travelling to Argentina to play for Club Atletico Atlanta and Lanus-Talleres. Andrade was a champion of Uruguay three times, winning once with Nacional and twice while wearing the yellow and black stripes of Peñarol.
This offered medal is circular and measures just over one inch in diameter. Etched in high relief on the front of the medal is a man riding a horse in front of a Uruguayan flag. The name “Leandro Andrade” is etched near the border of the medal. The reverse side has “Asociacion Patriotica del Uruguay” and “1830-18 de Julio-1930” etched around the border. Etched on the body of the back of the medal is “Todo Uruguayo Contrae al Nacer, La Obligacion de Servir a la Patria” and “1er Centenario de la Jura de la Constitucion”. This medal is a fantastic historical artifact and is in great condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
