On the night of January 15th, 1944, a deadly earthquake ripped through the Argentinian city of San Juan, killing over 10,000 citizens and razing nearly 90% of the city’s buildings. In response to the tragedy, a soccer benefit match between Argentina and Uruguay was held to raise funds for the affected community. It was at a separate fundraising benefit for the San Juan earthquake that future president Juan Peron met his wife, Eva Duarte. Offered in this lot is a medal from the Argentina-Uruguay match presented to the footballer “D. Borges”. This medal is silver, with an irregular shape and measurements of 1.5 x 1 inch. Etched in high relief on the front is a scene containing a winged angel, a soccer match, and a rising sun. The angel stands next to a trophy emblazoned with the blue “AFA” of the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino. Etched on the back of the medal is “Match Argentinos v. Uruguayos Pro-Victimas Sismo de San Juan” and “D. Borges 1944”. This medal is in great condition and is an evocative relic of a bygone era of world history. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
