Offered in this lot is a 1950 World Cup medal honoring Uruguay’s seminal victory over a heavily favored Brazil team. Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-1 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, shocking the Brazilians with a late goal from winger Alcides Ghiggia just 10 minutes from the final whistle. This offered medal is silver in color, and features a high relief etching of a soccer player kicking a ball above the Maracana Stadium. Etched in high relief above the soccer player is “Copa do Mundo”. Etched in high relief on the reverse side of this medal is “Uruguay Campeon Del Mundo 1950” and “Rio De Janeiro Brasil”. This medal measures approximately one inch in length. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
