Offered in this lot is a rare 1971 Uruguayan Primera Division season pass originally presented to 1950 World Cup hero Alcides Ghiggia. The Uruguayan-Italian winger scored the winning goal and assisted on Uruguay’s opener in their 1950 World Cup Final victory against Brazil; a match often referred to as the greatest upset in soccer history. In fact, “Alcides E. Ghiggia / Campeonato Mundial / 1950” is printed on the inside of this booklet-style ticket.
1971 was an important year for soccer in Uruguay, as domestic team Club Nacional claimed their first Copa Libertadores title in team history, defeating Argentine power Estudiantes de la Plata 2-0 in a playoff final. Nacional also won the 1971 Primera Division title, finishing one point ahead of fierce rivals Peñarol in the five-game playoffs. This offered booklet is printed with the Uruguayan Football Association’s logo, as well as “1971 Carnet-A”. It features several hole punches, and part of the front cover is missing. This historic item is a fantastic artifact from the life of one of Uruguay’s greatest sporting heroes, Alcides Ghiggia. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
