Offered in this lot is a gold medal from the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo featuring the Tower of Homage at the Estadio Centenario. The 1930 World Cup was the inaugural edition of the tournament, held in Montevideo due to Uruguay’s famous successes at the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. Estadio Centenario was constructed for the World Cup, with the skyscraping Tower of Homage standing in silent observation above the 80,000-seat stadium.
This medal is gold in color, with a high relief etching of the Estadio Centenario’s Tower of Homage on the front. The reverse features the crest of Uruguay above “A.U. de F. / Campeonato / Mundial / De / Football / Montevideo 1930”. This medal measures approximately 1 1/8 inches in diameter and remains in excellent condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
