France winger Lucien Laurent scored the first goal in FIFA World Cup history for France against Mexico on July 13th, 1930 at Estadio Pocitos in Montevideo, Uruguay. Laurent scored in the 19th minute of the game, with two more France goals coming shortly before halftime. France scored once more in the second half, and the game finished 4-1 in favor of Les Bleus. Fewer than 5,000 fans witnessed the game, with that number including the Argentina team, on hand to scout their Group 1 opponents. Unfortunately for Laurent and France, this game represented the high point of their World Cup, with successive 1-0 defeats to Argentina and Chile ending their title hopes.

Offered in this lot is a soccer ball-shaped trophy presented to Laurent in recognition of his historic goal. The 5’3” Laurent enjoyed a successful career in France, playing for clubs such as CA Paris, Stade Rennais, and FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. Laurent was named to the 1934 World Cup squad, although he did not feature due to injury. Laurent was the only surviving member of the 1930 World Cup team to witness France win the 1998 World Cup title on home soil. This trophy is approximately 15 inches tall and rests on an 8 ½-inc diameter base. It is etched with “Field de Pocitos / Lucien Laurent / Primer Goal Mundial / 13 Julio Hora 15 19 / FIFA 1930 / Montevideo”. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
