Uruguay’s legendary half-back Schubert Gambetta was an integral part of La Celeste’s international successes of the 1940’s and 1950’s. The Nacional star was a key figure in the stunning Maracanazo victory over Brazil in the 1950 World Cup Final, defeating the heavily favored Brazilian team 2-1 in one of world soccer’s greatest upsets. Gambetta won the Primera Division ten times with Nacional and led Uruguay to victory at the 1942 South American championships, now known as the prestigious Copa America tournament.
Offered here is Gambetta’s gilt bronze medal from the 1942 South American championship, hosted by Uruguay at the monumental Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Uruguay went undefeated in six games, scoring 21 goals and surrendering only two. Gambetta scored for La Celeste in their 7-0 win over Ecuador as Uruguay claimed their eighth South American championship. This medal is circular, with a high relief etching of an indigenous archer and “America / Cumplira Su Destino” on the front. Etched on the reverse side of the medal is “XIV Campeonato Sudamericano De Football” and “Homenaje De La Asociacion Uruguaya De Football Montevideo 1942”. This medal is in excellent condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
