In 1978, the soccer-mad nation of Argentina won their first World Cup title, defeating the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the historic Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. Mario Alberto Kempes powered Argentina to victory, scoring the first two goals of the game for La Albiceleste. Kempes won the tournament’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot as the top goalscorer in the World Cup, hitting the back of the net six times for Argentina’s powerful attack. Kempes earned 43 caps for Argentina, appearing in three World Cups and winning two Pichichi Trophies as the top goalscorer in La Liga while playing for Valencia.

Offered in this lot is a 1978 World Cup winners medal presented to Mario Alberto Kempes. The front of this medal features a high relief etching of the Jules Rimet Trophy. Etched in high relief around the border of the medal is “Argentina Campeon XI Copa Mundial De La FIFA 1978”. Etched in high relief on the back of the medal is the AFA crest. This medal comes on a 4 ¾ x 6 ½-inch display. A plaque on the display is accented with an AFA crest and reads “MARIO A. KEMPES GOLEADOR”. This historic medal is in great condition! This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
