In 1978, the soccer-mad nation of Argentina won their first World Cup title, defeating the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the historic Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. Mario Alberto Kempes powered Argentina to victory, scoring the first two goals of the game for La Albiceleste. Kempes won the tournament’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot as the top goalscorer in the World Cup, hitting the back of the net six times for Argentina’s powerful attack. Kempes earned 43 caps for Argentina, appearing in three World Cups and winning two Pichichi Trophies as the top goalscorer in La Liga while playing for Valencia.
