This 5” x 6 ¾” 72-page 1901 Constitution and Playing Rules of the National League and American Association of Professional Baseball Clubs Official Publication Published by A.G. Spalding and Bros. contains a “Compliments of N.E. Young, President” gold-seal engraving branded into the book’s cover. Young served as president of the National League from 1885-1902. The book’s first 21 pages are the Constitution of the National League and American Association of Professional Base Ball Clubs 1901, containing 64 sub-sections on topics ranging from, “Punishment of Scandalous Conduct,” to the “Effect of Club Disbandment” and seven pages covering “The Championship.” The second major section consists of eight pages covering the National Agreement followed by two pages on “The Rules and Regulations of the National Board of Arbitration.” 28 pages are devoted to “The Official Playing Rules,” followed by two pages of notes from the “Reconvened Annual Meeting,” and seven pages of National League Statistics as well as the 1901 schedule. The remainder of the book is consumed by 23 pages of advertisements for Spalding sporting goods products. The book remains in fantastic condition, with hand-written markings on only one of its pages none of which are folded or torn. This is a fascinating turn of the century period piece from the dawn of the game’s modern era.
