In the late 1920’s and 1930’s, only Jimmie Foxx could make a claim to be the equal of Babe Ruth. As first baseman of Connie Mack’s 1929-1931 Philadelphia A’s, often called the greatest team of all-time, “Double X”
amassed an even 100 homers and in 1932 he became the first player to come close to Ruth’s single season home run record when he slugged 58 round-trippers. The following season he did what The Babe had been unable to do: win the Triple Crown Award. When the three-time MVP winner retired in 1945, he had amassed 534 home runs and left a career batting average of .325. In his prime Foxx was a pillar of strength and virility (one opposing pitcher lamented that even his hair had muscles), but his health declined rapidly after retirement and he passed away in 1967 at just 59 years of age. As such, any autographed item from this elusive
500 Home Run Club member is highly collectible, but a single-signed ball such as the one offered here is off-the-charts scarce. The Hall of Famer signed the MacGregor Ralph Kiner League ball right on the sweet spot. A faint, almost indiscernible year notation “1942” appears on the panel above. The condition of the ball is beautiful, making this perhaps the finest Jimmie Foxx ball ever to come to auction. Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA (cert. number S11679) who has given the Foxx signature a grade of Mint 9 and the ball itself a grade of 7, with a 1/2 point bump for eye appeal for overall 8.5. No Foxx single signed baseball has ever attained a higher grade.
