Uruguay’s captain Obdulio Varela was presented with this gold medal after winning the 1950 FIFA World Cup in stunning fashion over a heavily favored Brazil team. In front of nearly 200,000 Brazilian fans in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, the stoic Varela fired up his Uruguay teammates and inspired La Celeste to a historic 2-1 victory that haunts Brazil to this day. This was Uruguay’s second World Cup appearance and their second title after winning the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo.

This offered medal is circular, with a high relief etching of the 1950 World Cup logo on the front. Also etched in high relief on the front is “IV Campeonato Mundial De Futebol” and “Brasil 1950”. Etched on the back in high relief is “Rio de Janeiro” and “Estadio Municipal” along with an image of the stadium. “Obdulio Varela” is etched in the side of the medal. This item is an incredible relic from the career of Uruguay’s famous number six, Obdulio Varela. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
