The final match of the 1950 World Cup was meant to be the coronation for a dominant Brazilian national soccer team. The peerless Selecao made short work of opposition in the World Cup, having defeated Sweden 7-1 and Spain 6-1 in the final round of the tournament. Uruguay were Brazil’s opposition at the Maracana Stadium, with the 1930 World Cup champions entering their first tournament since the inaugural edition of FIFA’s crown jewel. The final match, played in front of approximately 200,000 fans in Rio de Janeiro, started as expected, with Brazil earning the first goal through a clinical strike from outside right forward Friaça in the 47th minute. Uruguay clawed back a shock equalizer through Juan Alberto Schiaffino in the 66th minute to knot the score at 1-1. In the 79th minute, Uruguay’s diminutive winger Alcides Ghiggia sped down the right flank like a ray of light from the Sun of May, slipping a low shot past the anguished Brazilian goalkeeper Moacir Barbosa. La Celeste were named the champions of the world, with the fateful game assuming the name “Maracanazo”. Offered here is a panoramic photograph of the Maracana from the 1950 World Cup Final on July 16th, 1950. Printed on the black and white photograph is “Estadio de Maracana”, “16. Julio. 1950”, “Uruguay (2) Brasil (1)”. The photograph measures 18.5 x 4 inches and is displayed in a 21 x 7-inch frame. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
