Offered here is an authentic game used Chicago Cubs road jersey worn during the 1958 season. Based on the evaluation by the game used experts at Sports Investors, this jersey could have been worn by former pitcher John Briggs, who spent his first two seasons with the Chicago Cubs and was a mid-season call-up in 1958. 1958 was the last season Briggs pitched for the Cubs and appeared in 20 games, compiling a 5-5 record with a 4.52 ERA. The other player could have been infielder Paul Smith, who played for the Cubs for about a month starting on May 6. Smith only had 20 at-bats for the Cubbies that season. This offered jersey is a size 40 Wilson button-down with “CHICAGO” sewn on across the chest in blue and red felt. The Wilson size 40 tag is sewn on the bottom of the front left tail and the collar has chenille stitched piping in blue/red/blue. There is stitching loss on the collar, most notably the red portion and some of the blue. The same stitching pattern is also on the sleeve ends and is fully intact. On the inside collar is a gray felt patch that has embroidered in dark blue “30-1958-3-40”. The back of the jersey has the number “19”, which was the number worn by Paul Smith in his brief tenure and remnants of the number “30”, which was Briggs’ number in 1958, can be seen under a white light. This jersey appears to have been recycled for 1959 and/or sent to the minor leagues, a common practice in that era. The jersey displays heavy game use and wear. There are team repairs on the first “C” on the front and other stains, abrasions and material loss. This comes with a LOA from Sports Investors Authentication (200117F1) for the game use.
