Winter 2020 Catalog Auction Ending Feb 22
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2020
Presented is a rarely offered, attractive 72-card complete set of R145 Gum, Inc. "Superman" non-sports cards issued in 1940. Superman was an instant success following his creation in 1939, and he has endured for three generations as the most popular super-hero of all time. On these phenomenal cards, the first son of Krypton is portrayed in dozens of ways: fighting evil, rescuing the distressed, and seeking justice as only Superman could. Rarely offered as a complete set (due to the difficulty of locating the "High Number" entries), our research has shown that about a handful of these sets have sold at a major auction house in the past ten years. Highlights include: #'s 1 Superman (FR) and 72 Superman vs. Torpedo (FR/GD). The "Low Numbers" (48; #'s 1-48) grade 19% EX, 67% VG to VG/EX, 14% GD to GD/VG (one lesser); the "High Numbers" (24; #'s 49-72) grade 13% VG, 42% GD to GD/VG, 45% lesser. Overall, the set grades 13% EX, 47% VG to VG/EX, 23% GD to GD/VG, 17% lesser. As a point of reference on value, Goldin Auctions sold a similar, lesser-conditioned set for nearly $5,250 in their October Legends 2019 sale (lot #137).
