Enrique Ballestrero was Uruguay’s starting goalkeeper in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the small South American nation. Ballestrero was a brick wall in net for la celeste, holding opponents to only three goals in the entire tournament. Uruguay defeated neighbors Argentina by a score of 4-2 in the final match in Montevideo, earning the inaugural FIFA World Cup title with a historic victory. Ballestrero earned 19 caps for Uruguay and played his domestic soccer with Montevidean club Rampla Juniors. This offered silver championship medal features an etching of a goalkeeper making a leaping save on the front. The reverse side of the medal is etched with “A.U. de F. / -A- / E. Ballestero / Montevideo 1930”. This historic medal comes with a letter of provenance.
