Offered in this lot is a medal commemorating Uruguay’s three soccer world championships in the 1920’s and 1930’s. URuguay claimed a pair of gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics, shocking their European competition in 1924 with a 3-0 win over Switzerland in the gold medal match. Uruguay came back the favorites in 1928, defeating Argentina in Amsterdam to win the gold medal. Due to their Olympic successes, Uruguay were selected as the hosts of the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. Again, it was Argentina waiting for Uruguay in the final match, and again la celeste emerged the definitive victors with a 4-2 defeat of their South American neighbors.

This offered medal features a high relief etching of a winged deity on the front next to an etching that reads “Con Ellos Siempre”. Etched on the back of the medal is the flag of Uruguay, as well as “Colombes 1924 / Amsterdam 1928 / Montevideo 1930”. Etched in high relief on the back is “Uruguayos Campeones Mundiales De Football”. This medal is a rare and unique piece of soccer history!
