This collectible dominated the hobby landscape during the 1980's, and the quest for a top-level specimen could be said to have motivated an entire generation of enthusiasts. Although injuries and a prolonged run of under-achieving Yankees teams derailed Mattingly's path to Cooperstown (which once seemed inevitable) the gentleman athlete remains a fan favorite.
