Jason Giambi (41 home runs, 107 runs batted in), Alfonso Soriano (38 HRs, 114 runs scored, 35 stolen bases), Jorge Posada (30 HRs, 101 RBIs), Derek Jeter (.324 batting average) and Hideki Matsui (106 RBIs) provided plenty of offense in leading the Yankees to 101 wins and an AL East title during the regular season. Mike Mussina led the starting rotation with a 3.40 earned run average, while Mariano Rivera was his usual dominant self, recording an ERA of 1.66. New York defeated the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox to win the American League pennant, before falling to the Florida Marlins, four games to two, in the World Series.
