Offered is an original mixed media 3-D oil painting on wood by artist Steve Sax, celebrating the noted baseball-themed comedy sketch, “Who’s on First,” famously performed by the 1940s comedy duo of Abbott & Costello. Sax depicts the duo as they performed the routine in their 1945 Paramount film, “The Naughty Nineties,” with “straight man” Bud Abbott at the left in a St. Louis Wolves baseball uniform, and Lou Costello in a period bowler, suit and bowtie clutching a baseball bat at the right. Abbott and Costello have flesh tone painted faces and hands, with black, white and gray paint of their clothing (as they appeared in the black and white feature film). The background features a black and gray painting of buildings, with a baseball player in a uniform with a “P” logo on the cap and jersey, also in black, white and gray. Costello holds a 15-inch “broomstick” in his hands for use as the bat in the routine. The artist, Sax, has signed his name in black paint in the lower right background. The images of Abbott & Costello are mounted on two wood blocks painted black that raise their image from the background panel. The full artwork measures 6 x 27 x 39-inches. The artist has inscribed “Who’s on First Sax ‘14” in white paint on black paint on the reverse of the bottom panel. In 1956, a gold record of "Who's on First?" was placed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. A video (taken from “The Naughty Nineties”) now plays continuously on screens at the Hall. Sax, no relation to the former Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman, is a successful commercial artist and animator, who has been exhibited at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Boston’s Fleet Center, the former Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant  in New York, and has mural on display in numerous corporate headquarters including AT&T and IBM.
