1997 saw a major change for the Major League. For the first time in history, interleague play began and while some were skeptical or critical, many of the naysayers were convinced of the novelty when the New York Mets visited the New York Yankees in the first ever Subway Series that counted. The Mets took the opener of the series 6-0 behind the pitching of Mike Mlicki. The Yankees bounced back in Game 2, with a 6-3 victory.

Offered here are the home and visiting official scorecards from the second of the historic three-game series played at Yankee Stadium on June 17, 1997. The first lineup card is a blue card with the New York Mets. The top reads “ON ROAD – OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER CLUB NEW YORK” with the handwritten date in blue pen “June 17th”. The Mets’ lineup was handwritten blue pen on the designated lines and reads “Johnson – 8 Gilkey – 7 Olerud – 3 Hundley – 2 Huskey – DH Everett – 9 Baerga – 4 Franco – 5 Lopez – 6” with the pitcher “Reynoso – SP” listed below. Under the “ALSO ELIGIBLE” column is handwritten in blue “Bieser Castillo Ochoa Alfonzo Morgan Hardtke” for the bench and “Franco – P Kashiwada Jordan McMichael Lidle Reed Clark Jones Mlicki” for the pitchers. Reynoso’s name has been circled in black and “Lidle Jordan McMichael” were handwritten in black pen and circled, with “Kashiwada” written in black but not circled. The card has been signed by Mets’ manager Bobby Valentine in blue pen.

The Yankees’ card was printed on white paper and has “1997 OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER NEW YORK” printed on the top and “6/17/97” written in black. Under the “ORIGINAL” column the Yankees lineup was handwritten in black pen and reads “JETER SOJO O’NEILL FIELDER MARTINEZ HAYES WHITEN CURTIS GIRARDI” with “WELLS” as the pitcher. “FIELDER HAYES WELLS” were circled in black. Under the “ALSO ELIGIBLE” column is “BOGGS POSE DUNCAN KELLY POSADA” for the bench and the pitchers “CONE GOODEN PETTITTE ROGERS LLOYD STANTON MENDOZA MECIR NELSON RIVERA”. “KELLY BOGGS RIVERA” were added in the change column. This card has been signed by Yankees’ manager and Hall of Famer Joe Torre. Both of these cards come with individual COAs from JSA.
