One of the greatest events in sport began in 1930, as 13 nations gathered in the Uruguayan capital city of Montevideo to contest the very first FIFA World Cup. Uruguay was the slight favorite heading into the tournament, as La Celeste had claimed the gold medal in the soccer competition in the 1928 Summer Olympics. The Uruguay squad boasted several of the finest players in the world, including Captain Jose Nasazzi, Jose Leandro Andrade, Hector Castro, and Pedro Cea.
This presented ornate 1930 World Cup Championship medal was presented to Jose Nasazzi by the Consejo de la AUF, which was the Uruguayan Professional Football Council. The medal is made of silver and is approximately 2” in diameter. The obverse features an image of two players in raised relief and the reverse inscribed “Tri Campeon Mundial, Gan Captain, Jose Nasazzi, Montevidio Julio 1930”. The item comes with a letter of provenance attesting the item comes from the personal collection of Rony Almeida.
