Jeter and Junior were American League Eastern division rivals for the first seven years of Jeter’s career and the last seven of Ripken’s, playing against each other dozens of times over the years and on four All-Star teams together. Ripken, 6’4,” 200 lbs., was the proto-type during a transitional period at the shortstop position, perhaps the first in steady succession of bigger and more offensively productive players filling the spot with Jeter, 6’3” 195 lbs., following in his footsteps. Over the years the two have enjoyed a very congenial relationship. When Jeter passed Ripken Jr. on the all-time hit list in 2012, Cal was the first one to congratulate him. Jeter’s response was to say that Ripken was someone whom he always admired. Their mutual admiration and respect is obvious in this very sentimental photo taken during a day game at Oriole Park. It is signed by both in sharpie and has been authenticated by Steiner Sports.
