The city of Paris, France were the hosts of the VIII Olympiad, which took place from May 4th to July 27th of 1924. This was Paris’ second time hosting the event, becoming the first city to host the Olympics twice. There were 126 events in 23 disciplines that included 17 sports. Offered here is the gold medal presented to Ethel Lackie of the United States, who along with her teammates, took first place in the 4 x 100M Freestyle relay event. The American team of Lackie, Euphrasia Donnelly, Gertrude Ederle and Mariechen Wehselau finished ahead of the teams from Great Britain and Sweden, who won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
This offered medal is made of gilt silver and was designed by Andre’ Rivauld that features a naked victorious athlete on the obverse taking the hand of his rival while seated on the ground. The hand is extended to help him get up and underneath the image is the Olympic rings. The reverse has a harp as a symbol of the cultural program of the 1924 Games and the different sports equipment. This includes the winter as well as the summer and forms an arch. The center reads “VIIIeme OLYMPIADE PARIS 1924”. The medal is approximately 2 ¼ inches in diameter. “2ARGENT” is engraved on the side. The medal is in good overall condition and weighs approximately 80.45 grams. There is a small nick on the side by the left hand of the naked athlete on the ground.
